When Is It Too Late To Buy LTC Insurance?
My mother is showing very early signs of forgetfulness. Is it too late for her to buy long-term care insurance?
Unfortunately, the answer is probably yes. The biggest category of long-term care claims are for Alzheimer’s or dementia which typically last 8 to 10 years although there are some exceptions. LTC underwriters will usually request medical records for applicants with a family history of Alzheimer’s.
Any notes in your medical records by a physician regarding memory issues will disqualify an applicant from coverage which is another reason to apply for coverage at an earlier age (ex: mid 50’s).
